The 20 Fundamental Techniques

劈 (Pī) — Vertical Cut / Downward Slash: Downward power generated by the central pillar (Zhongding 中定) and the sinking of the pelvis.

刺 (Cì) — Direct Thrust: A thrust that penetrates the opponent’s guard, projecting Qi towards the tip of the blade (Jianjian 剑尖).

撩 (Liāo) — Upward Cut: A diagonal cut from low to high, used to intercept the opponent’s weapon and counterattack.

砍 (Kǎn) — Powerful Horizontal Cut: A circular two-handed cut that uses the rotation of the waist (Yao 腰).

截 (Jié) — Intercepting Cut / Cutting Block: Interrupting the trajectory of an incoming attack before it develops its full force.

崩 (Bēng) — Explosive Upward Strike: A short, whipping upward movement using the back of the blade to break the alignment of the opponent’s weapon.

点 (Diǎn) — Quick Point Thrust: A fast, precise wrist movement aimed at the joints or vital points.

挂 (Guà) — Upward Hooking Deflection: A protective circular movement that catches and moves the opponent’s sword away along the line of the body.

云 (Yún) — Cloud Sword Movement (Circular Movement Above the Head): Continuous two-handed rotation above the head to protect the guard through 360 degrees and build centrifugal force.

扫 (Sǎo) — Low Sweep: A horizontal cut directed at the opponent’s legs or lower supporting structure.

格 (Gé) — Structural Block: Absorbing and redirecting impact through the structure created by both hands on the handle.

绞 (Jiǎo) — Spiral Wrap / Twisting: A circular blade movement that traps the opponent’s sword to disarm them.

抹 (Mǒ) — Sliding / Scraping Cut: A horizontal cut performed while maintaining continuous contact with the opponent’s body or blade.

挑 (Tiāo) — Upward Lift with the Tip: An upward levering action used to open the opponent’s guard or strike the wrists.

压 (Yā) — Dominant Downward Pressure: Controlling the centre line by applying body weight over the opponent’s blade.

托 (Tuō) — Upward Support: A structural supporting action used to deflect heavy cuts above the head.

架 (Jià) — High Protective Block: An arched structure above the head used to block direct vertical cuts.

带 (Dài) — Guided Pull / Drawing Aside: Maintaining contact with the opponent’s blade and guiding it away, using its own force.

截腕 (Jié Wàn) — Wrist Interception: A fundamental tactical principle of Chinese swordsmanship: striking the attacking hand or wrist before the attack lands.

身剑合一 (Shēn Jiàn Hé Yī) — Unity of Body and Sword: The ultimate goal of the practice, in which the sword ceases to be an external object and becomes an extension of the spine and spirit (Shen 神).
